About Chesapeake and Ohio M-1 Steam Turbine by Justin Nelson

Constructed of 2,842 parts, this creation is a model of the Chesapeake & Ohio M-1 steam turbine locomotive. Standing 16' - 4" tall, 154' long and weighing in at 857,000 pounds, 3 of these behemoths were delivered in 1947 to pull the C&O's "Chessie" streamlined passenger train. These experimental locomotives utilized coal and water to generate steam which turned a turbine, generating electricity which in turn powered traction motors, moving the locomotive. Ultimately deemed a failure, the three M-1s were retired and scrapped in 1950, only three years after delivery.
