About GMD GMDH-3 by EmersonDA

This model measures around 26 studs in length, and will run on standard LEGO track.

In 1949, General Motors Electric established General Motors Diesel (GMD) on the outskirts of London, Ontario to produce locomotives for Canada that would avoid import tariffs imposed on US locomotives.

In 1956, GMD began production on the GMDH-1, and produced four locomotives in that class, with the first serving as the GMD yard switcher. In 1960, GMD produced the GMDH-3; essentially a GMDH-1 with only a single hood. Only one GMDH-3 was ever built: #275. Between the years 1960 and 1962, #275 operated as a demonstrator, including a period in Egypt, but no orders were ever filed. The sole GMDH-3 was sold to McKinnon Industries in St. Catharines, Ontario, where it served for almost thirty years.

In 1992, it was sold to the heritage museum South Simcoe Railway, but was declared surplus in 1995. The Southern Michigan Railroad Society purchased the GMDH-3 in 1995, was repainted from black to blue-on-blue, and it has been parked in Clinton Michigan ever since. It is not currently operable.

The GMDH-3 was an experimental diesel-hydraulic switcher powered by a single Detroit Diesel 8V-71 (V8 cylinder) engine, weighing in at 75k lbs (34k kg), and outputting 275 hp.
