About NSWGR 1200 class PCH Tulloch railmotor by Ewout Rohling

Introduced in 1971, the Tulloch 1200 class was a diesel railmotor designed to run in multiple. Typically composed as a four-car set, when the train came to a branch line junction, each car could disconnect and run as a single-car vehicle down the branch and back, reconnecting with the other cars on the return journey.

If this had worked, it would've revolutionised the slow and labour-intensive changeover to branch line services, and made rural train travel as much more viable option. Sadly, the cars were plagued with electrical issues and a litany of other mechanical flaws, which eventually saw them stripped of their engines and turned into loco-hauled carriages. A few were repurposed for the Silver Jubilee Exhibition train in 1977.
