About Railstock Finland/ VR class Sm2 by M. Falin
This 1:40 scale LEGO model represents the Sm2 EMU operated by Finnish State Railways, VR. Each train unit consists of two carriages. A total of 50 Sm2 train units were built by Valmet Aircraft Industry between 1975 and 1981. Each unit is approximately 53 metres long and has a top speed of 120 km/h. At the time of writing, in late summer 2026, around 30 Sm2 units are still in service, making it the oldest type of local train still operating in Finland.
My goal was to build a model that would be as realistic and recognizable as possible, with the proportions, colours and even the smallest details reflecting the original train. The designing and building of the model took around three months. During the summer, I travelled on numerous routes operated by Sm2 trains, followed the movements of the trains, recorded my observations and collected a large number of reference photographs. I wanted to get to know the train as thoroughly as possible before I started building it.
The model is not motorized and it's not suitable for tracks, as my main focus was on achieving a realistic appearance and structure. I paid particular attention to the equipment on the roof, doors, windows and many other small details. The colours and details were achieved almost entirely without the use of stickers.
The red-and-white colour seen on the model is not the original one of the train. It was introduced during refurbishment between 2002 and 2011. Since then, some of the trains have received a new green colour in 2020-2024.
However, this project became much more than just another model for me. Before starting it, I had gone through a longer period when I simply wasn't able to create much of anything. Building this model became a way for me to rediscover my creativity – and through this train, I found my way back to doing what matters most to me.
This is not just a LEGO model of an Sm2 train to me. It is also a story about finding the joy of creating again.
