About Southern Pacific P-8 2467 by Henry Mack @mackbricksmodels

My Model

The idea to model a Southern Pacific 4-6-2 began in 2020 after I discovered photos of P-8 No. 2472. After researching the surviving SP Pacifics and seeing 2467 in person in 2021, it became my favorite because of its story and its place among the more famous preserved SP Pacifics.

Digital design began in 2021, and after countless revisions, the model was completed digitally in September 2024. The cab, boiler taper, wheels, and many other parts were redesigned several times. I also rebuilt the internals to make the drivetrain easier to access. The tender is based on @ralvablox’s excellent 120-C design, modified to accurately represent 2467.

In summer 2025, I photographed the nearly complete model alongside the real 2467 in Sacramento. The final details were added over the following months, and the model was officially completed on December 4, 2025.

The locomotive uses a Power Functions IR Receiver V2 and two opposed L motors geared 1:1 to the XLL drivers. The drivers, trailing wheels, and rods were designed and 3D printed specifically for this model. I may eventually replace them with resin parts for a smoother finish.

This project has been a labor of love and one of the most challenging models I have built. After years of redesigns and improvements, I am extremely happy with the final result.

Locomotive History

Southern Pacific No. 2467 was one of fifteen P-8 class 4-6-2 Pacifics built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in January 1921. Numbered 2461-2475, they originally hauled long-distance passenger trains including the Overland Route and Sunset Limited. No. 2467 later served local passenger and commuter routes before making its final revenue run on December 26, 1956.

In 1960, 2467 was donated to Oakland and placed on static display. Restoration began in 1990 through the Friends of the 2467, later part of the Pacific Locomotive Association. It returned to operation in 1999 for Railfair 1999. Today, SP 2467 is on static display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, on loan from the Pacific Locomotive Association.
