About Victorian Railways X Class X40 by Ben Nguyen

The Victorian Railways X Class was a mainline goods locomotive built between 1929-1947 in which 29 were built. Basically a gauge-convertible C Class except with a larger boiler and a booster unit, these locomotives were heavily respected by the crews that worked them. They were the most powerful goods locomotives ever rostered. Locomotives X38-X41 entered service with former S Class tenders. The first 12 X's were built with Belpaire fireboxes which could be identified with a square boiler near the cab end of the boiler. These locomotives remained in service until November 1960 when X29 and X36 were withdrawn with X36 going into static display.
